A Breath of Spring

On this pastel-colored cotton fabric, the roketsuzome creates a delicate landscape where Japanese calligraphy evoking spring, cherry blossoms, and a bird perched on a branch blend together.

The soft shades of blue are accented by fine crackles, adding depth and character to the pattern.

Roketsuzome is a traditional Japanese wax-resist dyeing technique similar to batik. Hot wax is applied to the fabric to create a resist: it prevents the dye from penetrating certain areas. Once the wax is removed, the pattern appears, often with delicate, characteristic crackles. 

Designed by Cecile Au Zen:

– Size: 59 cm x 62 cm
– Color: pastel blue
– Care: machine wash on gentle cycle with mild detergent
– Each piece is one-of-a-kind

Production time:

Several hours of handcrafted work, divided among drawing, wax application, textile printing, and rinsing and drying times.

Ingredients:

– 100% cotton (cotton sourced from Japan)
– Hand-dyed
